It was only fitting that seniors Andrew Wiman and Kevin Piedrahita scored the only goals on a night dedicated to them. The duo led the Owensboro Catholic boys’ soccer team (6-10) to a 2-0 win over Hopkins County Central at home on senior night.

Head coach Andy Donohoe said he was glad they were able to each get a goal. They’ve put in a great deal of work for the Aces, and he was happy they could get some recognition.

“It’s pretty rare that you have the seniors on senior night both score a goal,” Donohoe said. “They both played excellent and have been great service for us throughout the years they’ve played for us. They’ve really come along so much in the years that they’ve played.”

It was Wiman who scored first, netting his second goal of the year — his first came in the season opener. Piedrahita got fouled in the box, but he let Wiman take the penalty kick. Wiman connected easily for a 1-0 lead 30 minutes into the first half.

The Aces struck again in the second half when Joe Fusco passed to Piedrahita up the middle. He beat a couple defenders and shot from the top of the box for the final score only 6 minutes into the second half.

Catholic largely controlled possession, though they did miss several chances to add to their lead. Donohoe was still glad to come away with a win.

“I thought we played pretty well,” he said. “I can’t really fault a whole lot of what we did. There was maybe a moment in the second half were we stumbled, but we really got back in control after that. I don’t think 2-0 was a fair reflection of the quality we showed in the game.”

The match was originally the last on the schedule for the Aces, but they added one more game since a few were cancelled earlier in the year due to weather and field conditions.

The Aces will host Lyon County at 7 p.m. Friday to wrap up the regular season. They’ll play Daviess County in the first game of the district tournament next week.
