After giving up the initial touchdown, the Kentucky Wesleyan football team took control for a 46-6 win over Lake Erie College at home Saturday. In posting their second conference win, it’s the most victories since joining the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

The first possession for Wesleyan (3-4, 2-3 G-MAC) nearly got them on the board first, but they lost significant yardage after getting inside the 5-yard line. Their field goal attempt was blocked, and the Storm turned it into a touchdown a few plays later.

On the extra point attempt, though, KWC’s Moe Carter blocked the kick and Jamir Johnson returned it all the way for two points.

On the ensuing drive, Corey Johnson exploded for a 38-yard run that fell just short of the goal line. Mike McGee ran in for the two-yard score to put the Panthers ahead 9-6 in the first quarter.

Quarterback Dessi Austin tabbed a 35-yard run on the Panthers next possession. Three straight carries from Landan Thomas set up the Panthers inside the Lake Erie red zone, where Austin connected with Johnson for a 6-yard touchdown.

Chris Logsdon sent a 41-yard field goal right down the middle with less than a minute remaining in the second quarter to give Wesleyan a 19-6 lead at the break.

The Panther defense started the third quarter by forcing a three-and-out, and Johnson  capitalized when he dashed 42-yards for a touchdown. Johnson tabbed another 42-yard touchdown run three minutes later.

Wesleyan didn’t let up in the final quarter, scoring two more touchdowns. Kam Taylor had an 8-yard carry and Dylan Byrd recorded a 10-yard rushing score.

The Panther defense blanked the Storm for the final 44 minutes of the game. Lake Erie was held to 159 yards of total offense and just 11 yards on the ground.

James Todd led the Panthers with seven tackles, six of which were solo.

Johnson led the offense, accumulating 156 yards on the ground for three touchdowns.

Wesleyan will hit the road for their final three games of the season. The Panthers start the road trip when they head to Hillsdale, Mich., Oct. 27 to take on the Hillsdale College Chargers at noon.
