A pair of late goals proved too much to overcome for the Owensboro Catholic girls’ soccer team, and they fell 2-1 at home on senior night to Henderson County.

The Lady Colonels’ Maddie Griggs set the state record by scoring her 203rd goal, and she led a strong offensive attack. OCHS head coach Kelli Brannock said they lost to a very good opponent, and she hopes it will help the Lady Aces (10-5-1) improve.

“Henderson came out hard,” Brannock said. “Give them credit. They’ve been having a really good year. I think they have a good vibe going. I think we can learn from that a little bit.”

The Lady Colonels held the edge in possession, but the Lady Aces’ defense held tough throughout the first half for a scoreless tie entering the break.

OCHS came back out aggressive and was able to score the first goal. Lily Moore beat a defender at the top of the box and made a short pass to Ashton Logsdon. Logsdon lofted a shot from left-to-right that went over the goalkeeper to give the Lady Aces a lead.

Henderson County pushed hard for the equalizer and finally got it on a set piece with 16:45 to play. A foul near midfield set up an indirect kick, and the shot sailed over everyone before taking one high bounce and going into the net untouched.

The Lady Colonels took the lead three minutes later when they gained possession in front of the Catholic goal. Griggs scored from the top of the box, and the Lady Aces weren’t able to match her goal.

Brannock said she didn’t feel like the team played as well as they could have, but they have a few days to make adjustments before the district tournament starts Tuesday.

“It felt like our passes were not going to our own team,” she said. “We gave the ball away. We didn’t take care of it. We have to fix that and come back strong.”

She said she’s got a strong group of seniors who will help prepare for the postseason, and they have plans of making a deep run.

“Our seniors have been great leaders this year,” Brannock said. “We’re not done yet. We’ve got Apollo on Tuesday. We’re going to regroup.”

The top-seeded Lady Aces will take on the E-Gals, who are the District 9 Tournament host, with a 5:30 p.m. match Tuesday. OCHS won both contests this year.
