Merchants finish busy pickleball schedule

Professional pickleball players Altaf and Beth Merchant wrapped up a busy few weekend of tournaments, bringing home a mix of gold, silver and bronze medals.

Team Merchant played tournaments in Notre Dame, Nashville, St. Louis and Purdue. In addition to winning prize money at open pro events, they won three gold, three silver and four bronze medals over that stretch.

Next up for the Merchants are regionals in Griffin, Ga., followed by nationals in Palm Springs, Calif., in November.

During their stretch of accomplishments, Altaf and year-long partner Brian Poynter of Evansville won the gold medal at the Survivor Challenge in Lafayette. They also won gold in Nashville and bronze in Notre Dame.

Beth and Altaf won silver in mixed doubles in Lafayette and bronze in Notre Dame. Beth and her partner Julie Manuel of Dayton, Ohio, won gold in Lafayette and silver in Nashville. Beth won a bronze medal in St. Louis with partner Katie McKee.

The Merchants are professional pickleball players that are sponsored by Onix/Escalade sports, based out of Evansville, Ind.
