Lady Bearcats advance to national tournament

The Brescia volleyball team is moving on to play in the NAIA National Championship. Though they finished as the runner-up of the River States Conference Championship, the Lady Bearcats (23-17) earned the second automatic bid to nationals.

Tournament champion IU Kokomo (34-4), who already earned the first bid by winning the regular season, beat Brescia 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-22) in the championship match Saturday.

Natalie Jones led the team with 13 kills and added 13 digs. Brittney Just finished with 20 assists. Kristin Logsdon had 17 digs, while Kailee Moore had 11.

Brescia advanced to the title match after narrowly winning their quarterfinal Friday and sweeping the semifinal match Saturday morning.

Friday, the Lady Bearcats took down WVU Tech 3-2 (25-15, 21-25, 21-25, 25-22, 16-14) with help from a strong game by setter Just (43 assists, 16 digs). Also leading the team were Jones (21 kills, 17 digs), Melissa Bell (12 kills, 15 digs), Kassidie Hayes (11 kills) and Moore (15 digs), Logsdon (29 digs).

Their semifinal went much smoother, as Brescia beat Asbury 3-0 (26-24, 25-14, 25-23). Porter and Jones both had 12 kills, while Just finished with 24 assists. Jones also had 11 digs, while added 15.

The Lady Bearcats have a week to prepare for the NAIA tournament, which begins Saturday. Times, locations and matchups have not yet been determined.
