Local cheer teams advance to nationals

Local teams will be heading back to the National High School Cheerleading Championship after qualifying in regional competition over the weekend. The squads competed in the 2018 UCA Bluegrass Championship in Lexington, Ky., Saturday to earn their bid.

Owensboro High, Daviess County High, Apollo High and Burns Middle all had at least one team advance to nationals.

Owensboro will send teams to compete in three different categories after winning both Varsity Coed Game Day and Large Varsity Coed 2 ½ minute, as well as taking fourth in Varsity Non Tumbling Game Day. Head coach Heather Cavitt was proud of the team for doing well after having at a football game the night before.

“I have five football players on my team, so I was nervous about the game Friday and having to compete on Saturday, but they were awesome,” Cavitt said. “I am so proud of all of my kids and I am lucky to be their coach. They were at the game cheering on our team and then we left at 6 a.m. to go to Lexington to qualify for nationals.”

Teams move on to the NHSCC, which is set for Feb. 8-10, 2019 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla., and is nationally televised on ESPN and ESPN2.

Results – Game Day:
Varsity Coed – Owensboro (1st place), Daviess County (2nd place)
Varsity Non Tumbling – Owensboro (4th place)
Super Varsity – Apollo (4th place)
Junior High – Burns (2nd place)

Results – Varsity 2 ½ minute
Super Varisty – Apollo (2nd place)
Medium Varsity – Daviess County (11th place)

Results – Coed 2 ½ minute
Large Varsity – Owensboro (1st place)
