Local teams compete in bowling tournament

A pair of out-of-town teams walked away as champions in day one of the 2nd Annual South Central Bank Holiday Showcase, an event hosted by the Kentucky Wesleyan College program to help bring talent from several states to the city of Owensboro.

Boyle County won the girls’ competition to start the day, and Taylor County’s boys closed out the day with a win at the Bowladrome.

The Apollo girls advanced the furthest of any local team, losing in the semifinals by three pins to Boyle County. The Eagles were the No. 2 seed and beat Russell County in their first round of bracket play.

Also in girls’ action, Daviess County beat Henderson County before falling to eventual runner-up Pleasure Ridge Park. Owensboro lost their first-round match to Russell County.

On the boys’ side, Daviess County earned a first-round bye as the top qualifier, but they lost to Trinity in the second round.

Owensboro lost in the first round to eventual runner-up Pleasure Ridge Park, while Apollo beat South Warren before losing to Boyle County.

The tournament continues Sunday with singles competition, starting with the girls at 10 a.m.
