After an intense first half, the pace slowed considerably and baskets were harder to come by. An early run in the third quarter put Owensboro up for good, and they handed Owensboro Catholic their first loss of the season.

The Red Devils (5-4) used some early buckets to jump out front to start the second half. Catholic (7-1) stayed close but wasn’t able to take the lead back, and they trailed 55-52 heading into the final frame.

The Aces had trouble with an active Owensboro defense, and turnovers led to a pair of easy baskets for the Devils. Isaac Humphrey hit a layup for a 59-52 lead with 6:39 to go, though Ji Webb banked in a 3-pointer at the other end.

The Red Devils maintained a two-possession lead for much of the final quarter, and Gavin Wimsatt hit two free throws to put Owensboro up 67-59, with 3:10 to go. A pair of free throws by Jaiden Greathouse gave the Devils their biggest lead of the night at 72-63 with 1:30 on the clock.

Catholic never really threatened again, as every score was matched at the other end by Owensboro. The Devils made enough free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.

Both teams relied on their up-tempo style for an high-scoring first half. Catholic threatened to take a big lead early, but the Red Devils went to Jaiden Greathouse down low and event the score.

Aside from a handful of outside shots, both offenses ran everything through the paint. The second quarter went back and forth from start to finish with both teams getting scoring from nearly everyone on the floor. John Parker was key for the Aces, scoring 10 points in the frame.

Seven different players scored in the quarter for the Devils, and nearly ever bucket resulted in a lead change. In the final possession, the Aces missed the first few attempts, but a putback by Parker gave them the edge at the break.

After a relatively uneventful first three quarters, the final frame was packed with excitement. The Panthers (3-5) needed a pair of free throws by Dakota Walden in the final second to escape with a win. The Eagles (1-10) were seconds away from winning their first game since the season opener.

Apollo held a slim lead for most of the second half, and Dan St. Claire converted the and-1 to put the Eagles up 42-38 with about four minutes to play.

A corner 3 by Chase Luckett and a layup by Gavan Ray put the Panthers up 45-44 with 3:35 let, but Ash got another and-1 to regain the lead. Another Luckett 3-pointer followed by a steal and layup from Walden left Daviess County with a 50-47 lead and two minutes on the clock.
