“Yesterday in Sports” brings you the highlights from sports in Owensboro and Daviess County.

HS archery: Apollo
College wrestling: Kentucky Wesleyan

ARCHERY
Apollo archery finished fifth in their division at the Henderson County Open on Dec. 14-15. Molly Clayton and Abbie Kempton both scored 245 to to finish as Apollo’s top archers for the competition.

WRESTLING
The Kentucky Wesleyan College wrestling team finished 37th in their first time competing in the Midwest Classic. Considered the strongest and best tournament in Division II, the Midwest Classic celebrated its 40th anniversary on Saturday with 39 teams competing. There are currently 61 Division II teams in the nation.

Nick Ornelas and Caleb Craig each scored team points by reaching the consolation rounds. Craig totaled two points after pinning Jude Lloyd from Queens late in the first period of the preliminary round. His Midwest Classic run at 141 pounds ended in the consolation round after falling to Riley Beard from McKendree.

Ornelas lost a 10-3 decision to start his Midwest Classic at 133 pounds, but he bounced back with an 18-10 major decision over Logan Sloss from Ouachita Baptist in the consolation round. He then exited the bracket with a 15-8 loss at the hands of Ashland’s Luke Wymer.

The Panthers will go dormant until Jan. 4 when they travel to Louisville for the Nuway Open. Competition is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m.
