The Brescia University men’s basketball team will try to maintain their first-place position in the West Division of the River States Conference when they travel to No. 11 West Virginia Institute of Technology today.

The Bearcats (7-7, 4-1 RSC) started off 2019 with a 77-74 win over the University of Rio Grande on Thursday, when all five starters finished with double-digit scoring. Kayode Daboiku led with 23, and Dillon Geralds added 17. Also scoring were Damontae Barnhill (14), Tristen Murray (11), Zach McDaniel (10) and Jalen Rose (2).

Though Brescia led by four at the half, they trailed by four with 5:37 to play before making a late run. The highlight play came on a backdoor cut by Geralds with the assist from Daboiku.

“This is a tough place to play,” said head coach Brian Skortz. “Rio is well coached and they play a different style that really makes you work on offense. I am very proud how we battled and we made the plays we needed down the stretch.”

With Indiana University Southeast losing to WVU Tech on Thursday, the Bearcats moved into sole possession of first place in the West.

Now, Brescia faces the Golden Bears (14-2, 5-0 RSC), who have hardly been challenged in conference play so far this season for easy control of the East Division.
