It was a slow start, but the Owensboro Catholic girls’ basketball team pulled away for a 62-37 home win Tuesday over Grayson County to move to 6-0 against 3rd Region opponents. Hannah McKay posted a double-double with 26 points and 11 rebounds.

They Lady Aces (10-6) carried an 18-15 lead into the second quarter, but they went nearly four minutes without scoring and the Lady Cougars (7-8) took advantage.

Using several second-chance opportunities, Grayson County took the lead twice before a 3-pointer from Mackenzie Keelin put Catholic up for good. A couple more buckets gave the Lady Aces a 30-24 advantage at the break.

Head coach Michael Robertson said the team didn’t look good from the start, including warmups, but they made the right adjustments at halftime.

“From the very beginning, it was a mess,” he said. “I think we were lethargic today. We were better in the second half, but we’ve got to put together a complete games.”

McKay scored 10 of her game-high 26 points in the third quarter as the Lady Aces blew the game open, outscoring the Lady Cougars 18-3. Catholic added to their lead in the final period.

Robertson said he’s happy to get another victory, but knows there’s plenty of room to improve.

“We got a win,” he said. “They played hard, but we’ve got to get better. We’ve got to get a little bit more fundamentally sound.”

Catholic will return to action Saturday at 1 p.m., playing in the semifinal of the 3rd Region All “A” Classic. They will play the winner of McLean County and host Hancock County.
