It didn’t quite come down to the wire, but Owensboro still had to scramble late before picking up a 62-47 victory over Trinity on Saturday afternoon.

In a game that was closer than the score suggested, the Red Devils (9-6) again had to rely on their defense. The offense struggled to connect most of the night — missing about 20 layups — but the Raiders (8-5) couldn’t handle the OHS pressure and fell behind early.

Amari Wales and Aireon Phillips each scored six in the opening quarter as Owensboro jumped out to a 15-10 lead. After trailing by as many as eight, Trinity’s Brendan Wathen scored on a backdoor cut to trim the deficit to 21-18 midway through the second quarter.

The Devils responded with a 9-0 run, including seven straight by Darrion Wimsatt, to earn a 30-20 lead at the half.

OHS head coach Rod Drake said after a big 9th District win over Owensboro Catholic on Friday, it could have been easy to come out flat.

“Coming off of a district game like that last night, emotions were running high,” he said. “You have to forget about it and turn it right back on. I thought we did a good job, but we got a little bit sloppy in the middle of the third quarter.”

The Devils were still able to stretch their lead to 47-33 heading into the fourth quarter, though Trinity made a final push before Owensboro was able to finally pull away.

Three separate times — once on a 3-pointer by Joe Brown and twice on scores by Landon Hall — Trinity got within seven points and had momentum with more than 4 minutes to play.

Wimsatt, who finished with a game-high 25 points, hit a runner in the lane to stretch their lead to 55-46, and Trinity couldn’t get any closer the rest of the way.

Though it was a sloppy finish to the week, Drake said he’ll take a victory and move on to the next game, a 3rd Region matchup against Muhlenberg County.

“It was a good weekend for us,” Drake said. “They were a couple quality ball clubs that we played. We’ll take the win and get ready for next Friday.”

The Devils host the Mustangs (9-4) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Trinity will play again Tuesday, when they travel to Owensboro Catholic (9-4) at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
