For the second night in a row, the Owensboro Thoroughbreds came up just short against the Tampa Bay Titans. In Saturday’s 85-81 loss, though, the Thoroughbreds (0-2) didn’t have to overcome a big deficit.

It was a late push by the Titans (2-0) that sealed the win, as the teams were tied at 60-60 at the end of the third quarter.

Owensboro head coach Adam Chrisco said while they certainly want to come out on the other side of the result, he saw some good signs after the second game.

“It’s a little disappointing, but I saw some growth,” he said. “We’re starting to come together a little better. I’m starting to figure out who my lineups are — who I can and can’t go to in certain times of the game.”

Leading the scoring for the Thoroughbreds with 15 points each were Brett McKnight and Corey Wilford, and Demarcus Robinson added 10. James Still finished with 8 points and 10 rebounds.

Owensboro started strong, taking their biggest lead at 22-12, though the Titans went up 38-36 at the half. Tampa Bay went up 53-40 before the Thoroughbreds used a 20-7 run to tie the game at 60-all.

Owensboro will continue its homestand by hosting the Raleigh Firebirds at 7 p.m. on Monday.

“Raleigh is going to come in here pretty tough,” Chrisco said. “They’re going to give us their best effort. I tend to think we’re going to grow a little bit more between now and Monday night and hopefully we’ll be able to take home the win.”
