The Daviess County High School dance team topped the competition for a first-place win at the NDA National Championships held over the weekend in Orlando. DCHS took home the championship trophy on Sunday in the Small Varsity Hip Hop division. The finals included 10 other teams that had qualified in the preliminary competition.

DCHS went into the NDA National Championship finals following a second-place finish in the preliminaries.

A tweet posted by DC Athletics says the DCHS dance team practiced until 2 a.m. after their second-place finish in the prelims. The tweet says DCHS “pulled away from the competition today” after working late into the night to clean up their routine.

DCHS earned an event score of 91.1667 to beat second-place finisher Hialeah Gardens High School’s score of 89.8333.

Head coach Debbie Connor said the team also finished second in the Small Varsity Game Day division and took home awards for “Innovative Choreography” and “Technical Excellence.”

“We are over the moon,” Connor said. “So much time, energy, dedication, determination, training and passion have gone into this road to Nationals. They’ve worked harder than any team I’ve ever coached. So, so extremely proud.”

The DCHS dance team is comprised of 12 individuals and three coaches. Dancers include seniors Celine Le, Emma Smith, Kaley Hall and Ellis Birkhead, junior Maggie Clark, sophomores Kyra Rowan, Katelyn Ahart, Terionna Inman, Breanna Herrin and Hope Miles and freshmen Lexie Coomes and Alexa McDuffee. The team is led by Connor and assistant coaches Kendal Connor and Kelsey Frields
