After shaking off a sluggish start, the Owensboro Catholic girls’ basketball team won big at home against Daviess County Friday night. The Lady Panthers (4-20, 0-5) were unable to break through the tough Owensboro Catholic (18-6, 5-0) defense early, a trend that continued for much of the game.

Daviess County held Catholic off the scoreboard for much of the first quarter, but the Lady Panthers soon found themselves in a 13-0 hole after one period.

Lady Aces head coach Michael Robertson attributed the slow start to a lack of practice due to weather and a need for rest coming off a big All ‘A’ Classic state championship.

“We were lackadaisical early on,” Robertson said. “We weren’t playing poorly defensively, but we were standing around on the offensive end and failing to do what we wanted to do. I substituted all five starters out of the game on one play, and I think they got the message after that. We weren’t great, but I’m pleased with the way we were ultimately able to take care of business.”

On a night when nearly all players on the roster were able to get in on the scoring action, Robertson was quick to mention his team’s depth, which he said has begun to develop after months of hard work.

“I want all the girls to feel like they get into the game and really contribute,” Robertson said. “We’re getting better each and every game. We want to be ready at the end of February when March rolls around. We don’t want to peak early.”

Catholic’s Hannah McKay led all scorers with 14 points, while Mackenzie Keelin added 13 and Sarah Beth Clemens had 10. Adylan Ayer led Daviess County with 8 points.
