The Owensboro Catholic girls’ basketball team cruised to a 59-29 victory over Owensboro to wrap up a 6-0 season in 9th District play Friday night.

The Lady Aces (20-6, 6-0) got 21 points from Mackenzie Keelin, and she had 8 in the first 3 minutes during a 15-0 run to start the game. The Lady Devils 912-15, 2-4) weren’t able to get into any rhythm and simply couldn’t keep up.

Owensboro Catholic head coach Michael Robertson said after a disappointing effort Tuesday — an overtime win against Christian County — his team came out strong against Owensboro.

“I thought we played defense pretty well today,” he said. “We frustrated them early. We were able to turn them over and get easy baskets.”

Up 23-7 after one quarter, the Lady Aces used 8 more points from Keelin to stretch the lead to 35-13 at the half. Another dominant period put them up 54-15 heading into the fourth.

Owensboro nearly doubled their score in the final frame to help trim the deficit.

Catholic returns to action Saturday with the toughest game left on the schedule when they play No. 8 Webster County in the Independence Bank Valentine’s Shootout. Webster County beat the Lady Aces 53-34 in December.

Robertson is hopeful heading into the rematch, as his team has played better since bringing home the All “A” Classic state championship.

“I’ve gotten a lot tougher on them,” he said. “I’ve been more detail oriented, making sure they know what I want them to do. I think it’s paid dividends so far.”
