Local cross country teams will be in action Saturday as they compete in their regional meets, racing for a spot in next week’s state championships.

Apollo, Daviess County and Owensboro will race in Marshall County in the Class AAA Region 1 meet, while Owensboro Catholic travels to Bowling Green for the Class A Region 2 meet.

The top six teams from each meet advance to state, and the top five individuals not on those teams will also advance. The state championships for all classes will be held Nov. 2 at Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington.

DCHS girls’ assistant coach Sydney Settle said the team’s goal is to win regionals.

“Our main focus is state,” she said. “But we want to have a good run (during regionals). Hopefully one of our girls can bring home the individual title and the team can bring home a title.”

Panthers head coach Mark Fortney said he wants to polish some things up for before regionals and close some gaps, but overall he thinks the boys’ team is heading in the right direction.

Apollo boys’ head coach Charlie Shoulta said Region 1 is the deepest in the state. He said if all five of his top runners show up healthy, focused and ready to race, he thinks they can give any team in the region a run for their money.

“Our region is solid one through four,” he said. “Daviess County and Marshall County are both two of the top eight teams in the state. McCracken County is also incredibly solid. We’’re showing up to region shooting for the win, but it’s got to be a total team effort.”
