After picking up dominant wins a week ago, Owensboro, Daviess County and Owensboro Catholic will all be back in action against district foes. Apollo is on bye during week seven.
The Red Devils will play Thursday, as they host Muhlenberg County and try to move to 3-0 in Class 5A District 1.
The Panthers will go back on the road and try to upstage Class 6A District 1 favorite McCracken County.
The Aces will play their final away game of the season at McClean County. Both teams are 1-0 in Class 2A District 2.
OWENSBORO vs. MUHLENBERG COUNTY (Thursday)
Led by their stout defense, the Red Devils (5-1, 2-0) have a favorable matchup against the Mustangs (2-4, 1-1) as they try to improve their position for the postseason.
Muhlenberg County has struggled to score this year — posting 22 points total in their four losses — while their defense has allowed at least 20 points in each game.
Meanwhile, Owensboro has allowed only 37 points all year including three shutouts. Even while the offense continues to develop, they’ve scored at least 36 points in four of five outings.
Most of the Mustangs’ production has come on the ground, as they have four 100+ yard rushers. Jamie Bullock (281 yards) and Alec Drake (255) lead the team, while quarterback Bronzyn Healy (170) and Caden Revelette (130) are also threats.
The Red Devils have playmakers all over the field, though most of their damage has come through the air. Quarterback Gavin Wimsatt has over 1,200 yards passing, with Tyren Hayden (424 yards, 7 touchdowns) and Treyvon Tinsley (307 yards, 3 touchdowns) the favorite targets.
Defensively, Owensboro has forced 11 turnovers and recorded 26 sacks. Muhlenberg County has just five of each.
DAVIESS COUNTY at McCRACKEN COUNTY
Both the Panthers (2-4, 1-0) and the Mustangs (4-2, 2-0) are looking to stay undefeated in district play, and it could turn into a high-scoring affair as both defenses have proven susceptible this season — they’ve each allowed just over 200 points so far.
McCracken County’s offense has proven capable of winning shootouts, averaging about 58 points during their current four-game win streak. Last week, they beat Apollo 81-51. Daviess County’s inexperienced offense has steadily improved each week, but they may need their best effort yet to pull off an upset.
The Mustangs have led a balanced attack with quarterback Elijah Wheat throwing for 1,329 yards and 17 touchdowns while running back Hunter Bradley has gone for 1,240 yards and 19 touchdowns on the ground. Bradley had 403 yards and seven scores against Apollo.
DC is rounding into a more balanced team as quarterback Joe Humphreys gets better in the pocket, though their success this week could come on the ground. Shane Riley has proven dangerous for the Panthers and leads the team with 681 yards and five touchdowns.
Both defenses have created opportunities this year. The Mustangs have six fumble recoveries and three interceptions, while the Panthers have 11 fumble recoveries and three interceptions.
OWENSBORO CATHOLIC at McLEAN COUNTY
Both teams sport a three-game win streak and 1-0 district records as the Cougars (3-3) host the Aces (5-1).
Catholic has the best offense McClean County has faced so far this year. Though the Aces have struggled out of the gate at times, they’ve been tough to stop once they get rolling. Quarterback Drew Hartz has more than 2,000 yards and has thrown 28 touchdowns with only two interceptions.
Leading receivers are Hagan Edge (625 yard, 10 touchdowns), Braden Mundy (556 yards, 4 touchdowns), Dre Thruston (400 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Jackson Staples (294 yards, 7 touchdowns).
With less than 200 passing yards, McLean County is a one-dimensional offensive threat. Peyton Caraway (573 yards, 5 touchdowns) and Andrew Munster (521 yards, 7 touchdowns) are the top two rushers, though four others have combined for seven scores and nearly 700 yards.
The Catholic defense has 12 takeaways this season and has recorded 16 sacks, while the special teams has five touchdowns. The Cougars have forced seven turnovers and recorded 14 sacks, with no scores coming from the special teams.
