Brady Terry finished fifth place as an individual, highlighting a solid day by both the boys’ and girls’ cross country teams for Daviess County in Saturday’s Class 3A state cross country championships in Lexington.

The girls’ team earned a spot on the podium with a fourth-place finish, while the boys were fifth.

Terry led the Panthers with a time of 16:07.88. The junior said he was happy with his race, as he finished 18 spots higher and nearly 50 seconds faster than he did in last year’s state meet.

“The race went pretty good,” he said. “The weather was really nice and that helped out a lot. It’s a lot better than last year with the course being muddy. It was pretty well packed the first 1.5 miles or so and then the pack started breaking up on the hill.”

Terry said the end of the race was a dead sprint, and he edged the sixth-place finisher by less than one tenth of a second.

Daviess County’s boys also got points from Alex Adams (24th, 16:43.19), Caleb Tidwell (67th, 17:29.31), Justin Shelton (68th, 17:29.44) and Bryson McGary (110th, 17:49.53)

The Lady Panthers were led by junior Emily Ann Roberts (15th, 19:40.78). Other scoring runners were Emily Rempe (22nd, 19:54.45), Ainsley Taylor (31st, 20:15.21), Kayley Payne (65th, 20:55.77) and Destiney Miles (70th, 21:04.06).

Head coach Mark Fortney said this was the eighth year in a row the girls have finished in the top four at state.

“We had a good showing,” he said about the team’s performance Saturday. “It can be hard to get on the podium.”

Freshman Thomas Ashby (16:37.27) led the Apollo boys with a 13th-place finish. Also scoring points for Apollo was Jake Alvey (124th, 17:57.77), Ethan Dych (58th, 17:23.75), Blake Rigdon (48th, 17:16.87) and Leland Smith (190th, 18:29.22).

Apollo had two girls run in the state meet — Ahmira Pickett (158th, 22:32.00) and Abby Rumage (199th, 23:08.25).

Owensboro had only one runner each in the boys’ and girls’ races. Senior Michael Ashely (128th, 18:00.09) and Ashley Colburn (179th, 22:52.49) represented the Red Devils.
