Hannah McKay will continue her basketball career at Murray State University, as the Owensboro Catholic senior signed with the Racers during a ceremony Wednesday afternoon.

McKay will be a key figure for the Lady Aces in the upcoming basketball season. She returns as the leading scorer (13.9 ppg) and rebounder (6.9 ppg) from last year’s team that made it to the KHSAA state quarterfinals.

Catholic also won the All “A” Classic state championship, where McKay was named the tournament MVP.

McKay is already a member of the 1,000-point club, crossing the benchmark on March 2 in a region tournament semifinal win against Breckinridge County.

She said all the accomplishments as a junior were special, and she’s hoping for another good season.

“They were pretty amazing,” McKay said. “I want to get back to the state tournament and hopefully win it all next year.”

Head coach Michael Robertson said McKay has always stepped up when the Lady Aces have been in tough games, and he expects more of the same this year.

“She’s been a vital part of the team,” Robertson said. “ She’s able to get us big buckets and rebounds in crucial times. It always seems like when the lights come on and it’s a big game, she is able to perform. I expect her to continue doing that and lead this team again and try to get us back where we want to be.”

Already a big threat down low, McKay said she has been focusing on her 3-point shot so she can be more versatile.

“I’ve really worked on my shooting a lot lately,” she said. “This summer that’s pretty much all I did was work on my shooting so I could expand my range.”

McKay said she chose Murray State over the summer after a welcoming visit to the campus.

“It really felt like home and I really love all the players,” she said. “Their coach said I was an all-around good player and she was really easy to talk to.”

While Robertson said the Racers are getting a great player, he is glad to have McKay for one more season.

“She has great instincts,” he said. “She’s able to cover a lot of ground and able to rebound the ball with the best of them, and she’s improved her outside game. She’s a really dynamic player that has an unlimited ceiling that she hasn’t come close to reaching.”
