Only 16 teams remain in each class of the high school football playoffs, meaning the extended path to a title game is slightly more in focus for Owensboro and Owensboro Catholic.
The Red Devils and the Aces will both host second-round games this week as they try to earn a spot in their respective quarterfinals.
Here’s who’s left in Districts 1-4 of both the Class 5A and Class 2A tournaments, including a quick breakdown of potential quarterfinal matchups for OHS and OCHS.
CLASS 5A (rankings based on RPI of teams in Districts 1-4)
Games:
• No. 1 Owensboro (9-1) vs. No. 4 Graves County (6-4)
• No. 5 Bowling Green (6-3) vs. No. 3 South Warren (9-1)
• No. 6 Fairdale (9-1) vs. No. 8 Bullitt Central (4-6)
• No. 2 South Oldham (9-1) vs. No. 7 North Bullitt (6-4)
Looking ahead:
If Owensboro and South Oldham both win, the Red Devils host the winner of Fairdale and Bullitt Central, and the Dragons host the winner of Bowling Green and South Warren.
If Owensboro wins and South Oldham loses, the Red Devils host the lowest remaining seed between Fairdale, North Bullitt and Bullitt Central. The highest remaining seed would play at the winner of Bowling Green and South Warren.
CLASS 2A (rankings based on RPI of teams in Districts 1-4)
Games:
• No. 2 Mayfield (9-1) vs. No. 5 Murray (7-3)
• No. 4 Owensboro Catholic (8-2) vs. No. 6 McLean County (6-4)
• No. 8 Edmonson County (4-6) vs. No. 7 Clinton County (6-3)
• No. 1 Lexington Christian (9-1) vs. No. 3 Somerset (9-1)
Looking ahead:
Owensboro Catholic’s only chance at a home quarterfinal game would be if Murray upsets Mayfield, in which case the Aces would host the Tigers regardless of who wins the other two second-round games.
If Lexington Christian and Mayfield both win, Catholic will play at Mayfield and the winner of Edmonson County and Clinton County play at LCA.
If Somerset and Mayfield both win, Catholic will play at Somerset and the winner of Edmonson County and Clinton County would play at Mayfield.
