Local bowlers displayed their talents over the weekend, as the Apollo girls and Daviess County boys finished at the top of the leaderboards during the 3rd Annual South Central Bank Holiday Showcase.

Apollo kicked off the three-day event by capturing the girls’ team title on Saturday, while the DC boys fell in the semifinals of their bracket.

In Sunday’s individual tournament, Apollo senior and Kentucky Wesleyan College commit Emma Workman earned third place in the girls’ field.

The showcase wrapped up Monday with a doubles tournament — new to the event this year — with Daviess County senior and KWC commit Briar Harper and teammate Evan Decker (KWC freshman) taking first place.

The team event Saturday began with all teams bowling four qualifying baker games. They were then seeded for bracket play based on total pins from qualifying.

The Apollo girls were seeded fourth, and they won all four games in bracket play. They beat No. 1 seed Pleasure Ridge Park in the semifinals before taking down No. 3 seed Central Hardin for the championship.

The DC boys earned the No. 1 seed and beat two South Warren squads before being upset by No. 12 seed Bardstown in the semifinals.

Singles play on Sunday featured four games of qualifying before the field was narrowed to the top 10 girls and top 20 boys. The remaining competitors bowled two more games, and the six-game total was used to determine the final four in both the girls’ and boys’ field.

The top four rolled two more games to determine the championship and consolation matches.

In the girls’ championship match, Morgan Brookover (Davisville, W. V.) defeated Madi Hawk (Anna, Ill.) 408-392. In the third-place match, Apollo’s Workman defeated Meghan McGee (Lowell, Ind.) 410-365.

In the boys’ championship match, Charles Bostic (Atlanta, Ga.) defeated Simon Mote (Laura, Ohio — KWC commit) 464-401. In the third-place match, Wesley Yazell (Lexington, Ky.) defeated Jason Womack (Russell Springs, Ky.) 432-350.

In the doubles event, each team bowled five qualifying games using baker format and the field was cut to four, with an additional two games then used to determine the championship and consolation pairings.

In the championship match, Harper and Decker defeated Carter Collins and Connor Japp (teammates at South Warren) 413-339. In the third-place match, Brookover and Wayne Zapotoczny (Davisville, W. V.) defeated Mote and Austin Tungate (Campbellsville, Ky.) 457-396.

Seven states — Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, West Virginia and Georgia — were represented in the showcase.

Saturday featured 31 total teams, Sunday’s individual field had more than 70 entries, and Monday’s doubles event had 30 teams. Nearly 400 total bowlers competed over the three days.
