Owensboro Catholic was dangerous from deep, and their 10th and final 3-pointer put them ahead for good as the Lady Aces outlasted Apollo for a 50-48 win in an absolute battle Friday night at the Sportscenter.
Trailing by two in the final minute, the E-Gals (2-2) had one final chance to to knock off Catholic (4-1) for an early edge in the 9th District girls’ basketball standings.
A defensive stop gave Apollo the final possession. They drew a foul with four seconds to go to set up one last look, but the potential game-winning 3-pointer from the corner on the inbounds pass was a little long.
Each team had one player with a double-double — Catholic’s Hannah McKay finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds, while Apollo’s Amari Sanders posted 10 points and grabbed 11 boards.

The Lady Aces finished 10-for-19 from 3-point range, including Catherine Head knocking down all five of her shots from deep. Caroline Reid’s only made basket of the night was a 3-pointer with about two minutes to play, and it proved to be the last score for either team.
“Catherine played a heck of a game shooting the ball,” said Catholic head coach Michael Robertson. “Then we got Caroline that steps up and hits that big shot in the corner.”
Though the Lady Aces struggled from the free throw line most of the night (12-for-25), they had 10 steals and didn’t turn the ball over much themselves.
“It’s about time we took care of the ball,” Robertson said. “If we didn’t, we would have have gotten beat. I don’t think we played a great game, but I think we dug deep and played just enough to win.”
Neither team led by more than two points at the end of any period, and the lead went back and forth throughout the contest. Catholic led 12-10 after the first quarter, but Apollo took a 26-25 lead at the half. The Lady Aces led by one heading into the final frame.
Robertson is happy with a win, but said his team settled for too many outside shots.
“We didn’t get the ball inside enough,” he said. “We should take advantage of our inside presence. We kind of settled for a lot of jump shots. Thankfully they went in.”
Catholic returns to action Sunday when they play at Meade County. Apollo will play Saturday at Muhlenberg County, where they’ll face Murray in the Lady Mustang Classic.
