The Owensboro girls won every one of their races, while the Owensboro Catholic boys nearly did the same as they each laid claim to their respective city-county swim titles Tuesday at the Owensboro Health Healthpark.
Catholic took first place in the combined scores (girls and boys) with a 297 — marking the sixth year in a row they’ve won the overall trophy. OHS finished second (247) in combined scoring, with Daviess County placing third (199) and Apollo a close fourth (195).
Owensboro’s girls earned 198 points, beating out Daviess County (97), Catholic (92) and Apollo (79).
The Catholic boys’ earned 205 points, beating out Apollo (116), Daviess County (102) and Owensboro (49).

Catholic co-head coach Erica Crabtree said while they have several top performers, having so many swimmers on the team also played a big role in winning the title.
“Coming into today there was a lot of pressure, but we have a lot of swimmers — 35 are on our roster,” she said. “Numbers matter in a meet like this. Every point counts. We knew coming in our boys were going to be strong. We had several who got a couple first-place finishes and all the boys’ relays won.”
The only events the Catholic boys didn’t take first place in were the 200 IM and 500 Free, both of which were won by Daviess County’s Trevor Church.
Co-head coach Abby Hampton said the season is still young, but they’ve already seen growth in their swimmers.
“They’ve done a lot of work on their technique,” she said. “We saw a lot of improvements this weekend (at the Candy Cane Classic) and today.”
On the girls’ side, OHS did more than just finish first in every event. They swept the podium in the 200 Free and 50 Free races, and they took the top two spots in the 200 IM and 100 Free.
“These girls are amazing,” said Owensboro head coach Brad Schmeid. “We had a couple specific goals this year — to win every event on the girls side, get first and second in several, and then sweep a couple. We did all that.”
Schmeid said several swimmers competed in events they aren’t used to in order to help earn more points in the meet, and he was happy with their performances.
“We have a lot of new swimmers this year,” he said. “To maximize our points, we put them in events they’ve never done before. The times looked solid today.”
Eight girls and 10 boys were named to the All-City-County team based on their performances in the meet.
