Hannah McKay dominated her way to another double-double, leading the way as Owensboro Catholic easily won their second straight 3rd Region All “A” Classic championship.
The Lady Aces dispatched Hancock County 57-31 in Monday’s title game at Edmonson County, jumping to a big lead early and never looking back. McKay, Spencer Harvey and Isabella Henning were named to the All-Tournament team.
McKay was the only double-digit scorer of the night, finishing with 22 points to go along with an impressive 17 rebounds, adding three steals and a pair of assists. She had 14 points and 14 boards by halftime.
Catholic (12-5) built a 19-6 lead in the first quarter, then put the game away in the third by stretching the advantage to 50-23.
“I think our experience and depth played a big factor in the game,” said head coach Michael Robertson. “I think we were patient on the offensive end when we didn’t get something in transition. We did a good job making it tough on all of their shooters, and we made them put it on the floor and make decisions.”
Other scoring for Catholic came from Ally Magard (7), Harvey (6), Katie Riney (5), Catherine Head (5), Caroline Reid (3), Kashlynn Rice (3), Henning (2), Brooke Hamilton (2) and Tierney Johnson (2).
As a team, they went 7-for-12 from 3-point range and assisted on 16 of 22 made baskets.
The Lady Aces have now won 14 titles in 16 tries in the All “A” regional tournament. They went on to win their third-ever All “A” state title last season, tying the record for most by any girls’ program.
They’ll now move on to the state tournament at Eastern Kentucky University, with a first-round game scheduled for Jan. 22 against the winner of the 10th Region.
“It’s a great feeling,” Robertson said of making the repeat trip. “We’re happy to get to go back to EKU and defend our title from last season. Hopefully we can go up there and make some noise again.”
