Young volleyball enthusiasts will have a new opportunity to develop their skills next month in the first ever Little Spikers Youth Instructional Volleyball League.

Owensboro Parks and Recreation has teamed up with Audubon Volleyball Association, Inc. and Owensboro Volleyball Club to put on the event. The league is designed to get children active and playing volleyball at a younger age. It will acquaint them with the sport, teach fundamentals and develop basic skills.

The league will have two age groups — 3rd-4th grade and 5th-6th grade — and accepts registration for male and female participants. It will run from Feb. 9-March 12.

The players will practice every Thursday and put what they have learned into action on Sundays during their scheduled match.

The cost is $70 per child, and the registration deadline is Feb. 3.

“In today’s society, sport is the number one way for kids to develop physically, emotionally and socially,” said Steve Howard, who coaches for the Audubon Volleyball Association and at College View Middle School. “Currently volleyball is the second-largest high school sport behind track in the nation. This program will be a great opportunity to be introduced to this growing sport.”

To register or for information call 270-687-8700, or stop by the Owensboro Parks and Recreation Administrative Center at 1530 McJohnson Ave.
