The Red Devils dominated their way to another 9th District win, rolling past Apollo for a 65-36 victory at home Friday night.
Owensboro head coach Rod Drake said he was confident coming into the game, as the past week was the first time his team had a full week of complete practices together. With so many of the players joining late after a deep football postseason run, the Red Devils didn’t have time to do much together before basketball season began.
After playing eight games against tough competition in a nine-day stretch around Christmas, OHS took a week off from competition to regroup and prepare ahead of their game with Apollo.
“The last couple weeks have been good,” Drake said. “We’ve played some good competition. We were ready to play tonight. I thought we played well. It could have been better, but with the layoff, I’ll take it.”

Owensboro (9-5, 2-0 9th District) was a little slow out of the gate, but their fast-paced attack allowed them to put the game away early. Apollo (1-12, 02) trailed 15-9 after the first quarter, and the gap grew to 31-19 by halftime.
Much of Owensboro’s scoring came in transition, something Drake tries to instill in his teams.
“When they’re more aggressive defensively, that’s where offense comes from,” he said.
The Red Devils also got some help from long range, as Tucker Hagan knocked down four 3-pointers and finished with a game-high 19 points.
“He’s probably been our most consistent outside shooter,” Drake said. “Tonight he was doing well so we went with him. He stretched the defense out and came ready to play tonight.”
Jaiden Greathouse was a big threat down low for OHS, scoring eight of his 14 points in the third quarter as the Red Devils stretched their lead to 52-27.
Apollo was led by Cameron Frantz with 11 points, and Malik Wilson added eight. The Eagles play again Tuesday when they host Meade County.
Owensboro returns to action tomorrow when they face undefeated Elizabethtown (8-0). Next week, they travel to both Ohio County (11-2) and Owensboro Catholic (7-5).
“We’re in the grind of the season,” Drake said. “I think we’re prepared for it and looking forward to it.”
