Both Trinity teams jumped out to big first-half leads, and they went on to beat Frederick Fraize on the road Thursday in the first round of the 3rd Region All “A” Classic to secure spots in the tournament semifinals.
Both teams will now play Hancock County on Saturday, with the girls tipping off at 12 p.m. and the boys set to start at 1:45 p.m. The rest of the tournament is at Edmonson County.
Cassidy Morris scored 10 of her game-high 18 points in the first quarter, leading the Lady Raiders (7-4) to a 65-46 victory in the girls’ game. Eleven players scored in the boys’ game, and Trinity (5-8) hit enough free throws down the stretch to secure a 69-58 win.
For the girls, a 24-point first quarter helped the Lady Raiders take control early. In addition to 10 points in the period from Morris, Trinity got eight from Josie Aull and six from Hadley Hatfield.
Trinity stretched their lead to 26-18 by halftime, and eight points from Morgan Kinsey in the third quarter helped them carry a 56-32 advantage into the final frame.
The Trinity boys’ were led by 12 points from Ethan Howard, while Landon Hall and Landon Huff each added 11. As a team, the Raiders went 23-for-33 at the free throw line, including 13-for-18 in the fourth quarter.
Up three after the first quarter, Trinity pulled away for a 37-28 lead at the half. They largely maintained that lead the rest of the way, with Huff and Hall each scoring seven points in the second half.
