Starting Friday, there will be an “extreme limit” on who can attend the remainder of the girls’ basketball state tournament.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett made the announcement Thursday morning shortly before the second day of the Mingua Beef Jerky Girls Sweet 16.

The same plan will be in place for the entirety of the Whitaker Bank/KHSAA Boys Sweet 16 that begins Wednesday, but there could be even more if circumstances change before then.

Players listed on the postseason roster can have four family members attend. A limited number of school administrators can also attend.  No bands, cheerleaders or outside fans will be allowed.

Tickets will be assigned seating and separated, with several empty rows between attendees to allow “social distancing.”

Tackett said most fans who have already purchased tickets will be eligible for refunds, either through Ticketmaster or by visiting the Rupp Arena ticket office.

Tackett estimated the loss of ticket sales from the boys’ state tournament would be around $1 million.

More details will be sent to the schools.

Media are still allowed at this time, so Owensboro Times will be at both state tournaments and will provide live updates from the games via social media.
