Get prepared for at least three weeks of absolutely no high school sports. No games, no scrimmages, no practices, nothing.

Over the last 48 hours, COVID-19 (the coronavirus) has put essentially the entirety of the sporting world on pause, and local high schools are no exception.

Owensboro Public Schools and Daviess County Public Schools both announced Thursday that once classes let out Friday, schools would be closed until April 6 (the Monday after spring break). Owensboro Catholic Schools and Trinity High School follow the decisions made by DCPS.

“It’s not like a snow day or something where we can still have something at night,” said Owensboro athletic director Todd Harper. “Everything is totally shut down for the next three weeks.”

Owensboro Catholic had already been dealt a blow earlier in the day with the indefinite suspension of the girls’ and boys’ state tournaments. The girls were scheduled to play Thursday night but never took the floor, while the boys’ were set to play next week.

The door was left open for the tournaments to be made up in the spring, but for now all Morris knows is everything is locked down.

“All we know is everything is suspended through at least the end of spring break,” he said.

Daviess County athletic director Larry Logsdon said athletes have until 3:15 p.m. Friday to get anything they need out of locker rooms. After that, no one is allowed to be on campus.

He doesn’t know yet what the spring season will look like, if there even is one.

“Right now we’re just waiting on a decision to be made,” he said. “It could go a few different directions. They’ve got three weeks to decide what’s going to happen.”

Apollo athletic director Dan Crume and Trinity athletic director Christina Rhodes both confirmed no athletic activities will take place during the time schools remained closed.
