There will be no more basketball this season for the Owensboro Thoroughbreds or the rest of the teams in The Basketball League (TBL).

The news came Thursday as sporting events across the nation were being cancelled.

In a statement Wednesday, the TBL announced the regular season would end effective immediately, but they had arranged to play a league tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter next weekend with no fans present.

The tournament was then cancelled Thursday, with the league saying “the level of potential risk for all TBL participants is too great to go forward with this event (even without fans).”

Thoroughbreds owner Chris Allison released a statement saying the organization agrees that complete cancellation is the best move to ensure safety for everyone.

He said the team won’t be going anywhere and will still be a part of the community.

“We thank all of our fans who have made this season so great,” the statement read. “We have enjoyed every second of it. We look forward to next season and continuing growth with this great community. In the offseason, we will continue to be involved in the community through camps, leagues and local events. The Thoroughbreds are here to stay and we cannot wait to represent Owensboro again next year.”
