It’s official, the 2020 state basketball tournaments will not be resumed and there will be no spring sports across Kentucky. The “coronavirus dead period” will continue until further notice for all sports, and the KHSAA will continue discussions over the coming weeks regarding the fall season.
The announcement was made just after noon on Tuesday, a day after it was recommended that schools across the state remain closed to in-person instruction for the rest of the academic year.
The girls’ state basketball tournament was put on pause during the second day of competition, while the boys’ tournament never even began. Neither tournament will take place.
Also cancelled are all regular-season practices and contests as well as all postseason tournament championship events for all spring sports and sport-activities for the 2019-20 school year. That includes bass fishing, baseball, softball, tennis, and track & field.
“This impacts so many people, but in the end, is in the best interest of public health,” said KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett. “We have been especially concerned with the graduating class of 2020, those seniors who put so much into their athletic participation opportunities hoping for one last time to shine before the home crowds or at postseason events.”
The current athletic dead period — which began March 13 — will remain in effect until further notice for all sports.
Tackett said it is too early to make any decisions either way regarding fall sports, but they remain optimistic that they will have some semblance of a season — even if it isn’t exactly normal.
