The spring season for Daviess County Youth Soccer has officially been cancelled due to COVID-19, though hopes of a fall season are still alive.

Nearly 1,000 players had registered for the spring season, which was originally scheduled to begin April 18.

There are three options regarding what families can do about registration fees, and DCYSA Vice President John Congleton said emails were sent to each family with details.

Option one is families can get a refund, minus $5 for processing fees that must be paid by DCYSA for signups. Option two is families can apply their registration to the next season, which is anticipated to be in August. Option three is families can donate their registration fee to help with maintenance of the fields.

“We had to take a wait-and-see approach about these decisions because we don’t have any real information about when our next season will be,” Congleton said. “Best-case scenario we’d like to play in August and September.”

If they can play this fall, all players will be eligible to compete in the age group they registered for this spring. There will be no aging out or aging up.

Pushing the spring season into the summer months was not an option because of heat concerns.

“We can indefinitely delay our season, but we really can’t play in June or July,” Congleton said. “Because of the number of games we have, they do occur in the hottest part of the day.”

The fall schedule is usually set for September-October, but DCYSA is hoping for an August-September slate to avoid the cold temperatures at the end of the season.

However, they will still strictly adhere to the safety guidelines that may remain in place.

“We kind of felt that having an earlier fall season, if we can, would be the best-case scenario for us,” Congleton said. “Obviously if parks continue to stay closed or it’s still not advised for us to play we’ll have to cancel and wait until we can play.”
