Owensboro Country Club broke ground Monday on a par-3 short course, craftily titled ‘The Drop Zone.’ The addition will feature five par-3 holes ranging from 60-120 yards.

The vision was formed in October as part of the board of directors’ long-term plan. A primary component of that plan is to continue to foster a family environment, and general manager Dane McLaird believes this is a step in the right direction.

“Our goal here is to create a family-centric environment that caters to all members of the family,” he said. “This is just another way that we are striving to combat that good-ole-boy persona that historically surrounds country clubs.”

Boasting an 18-hole course with tee placements ranging from 5,294 to 6,518 yards, OCC was searching for ways to cater to rookies. This short course should do just that.

“This is going to be great for our juniors and others that are new to the game,” McLaird said. “When you get on the big course, it’s easy to get intimidated. This should provide a great bridge for those that are new to the game.”

That being said, the addition should prove to be an asset to golfers of all ability levels.

“Our PGA Professional Jason Fitch will make great use of the course during his lessons,” McLaird said. “I also look for some of our experienced golfers to use it as an opportunity to improve their game.”

The club is also set to break ground on a new pool house and cabana bar by the end of the month. McLaird looks for the two additions to be completed by the end of the season at an estimated cost of $975,000.

The club is also excited about offering the new amenities during their many non-profit events.

McLaird hopes the new projects will attract new families to the club while also enhancing the experience for current members.

“We now have grandparents bring their grandkids back to the club. This will be great for them,” he said. “These are going to be excellent resources for all of our members and we’re excited about what the future holds.”
