If you’re reading this, then you’re aware the Owensboro Times has a new sports editor in myself.

To say I’m excited for this opportunity would be an understatement.

When OT Managing Editor Ryan Richardson reached out to me a few weeks ago, I knew this would be difficult to pass up … so I didn’t.

For those that aren’t aware of my background, I spent the last 3.5 years in Hopkinsville at the Kentucky New Era, where I was the sports editor for the last two years.

I grew up in southern Illinois and attended SIU Carbondale for undergrad. After working in central Illinois for a year, I went to Murray State University for my Master’s before making the move to Hoptown.

I’ve only been gone from there a week and I’ve had to answer why I left Hoptown several times. Yes, the athletics in Hopkinsville were some of the best I’ve ever seen, but the sports in Owensboro are something to take notice of.

With four high schools and two colleges in close proximity, I saw an opportunity to challenge myself, so I took it and ran with it.

Monday was my first official day at the Owensboro Times. While you may not see my name much on the website much this week, be sure you’ll be seeing more of it starting next week.

This week has been spent learning a new city and meeting people.

In the meantime, feel free to send any and all story ideas to [email protected]. My direct messages are also open at my Twitter handle @tdixonOT.

I want to dive in a little more about why I’m excited for this opportunity. The online-only platform the OT has is something that I’ve wanted to work on for the last several years. I’m a newspaper purist but I know things are going in a different direction and it’s time to adapt.

With the online-only platform, it presents nearly unlimited ways to interact with readers.

We’re working on several projects that I hope everyone enjoys.

If you see me around town, say hi, give me an elbow bump.

I want the community to feel like they have a voice in the content I churn out because they do. I’m here to promote what this community can do and I’m going to do that to the best of my abilities.
