What was the first thing Owensboro High School junior quarterback Gavin Wimsatt did when he found out he was No. 37 on 247Sports’ latest recruiting rankings for the class of 2022?

“I didn’t know what to do,” he said. “The first thing I did was call my mom. I was in shock. I got super excited.”

Wimsatt threw for 2,729 yards with 31 touchdowns and 10 picks during his sophomore season while also running for 564 yards and 12 scores on the ground.

The dual-threat QB said his second prep season gives him a lot to look forward to in his final two years at OHS.

“I think it builds just because I’ve gotten better over the summer and I think I can do better,” he said. “There are some things I could have worked on and I did. I’ve gotten better at them so I think it helps a lot.”

Wimsatt said mechanics are something that he’s focused on this summer, in addition to working on his throwing accuracy. He said the key is to be more consistent.

The Red Devils finished 12-2 a year ago before falling to Frederick Douglass in the KHSAA Class 5A State Semifinals.

For Wimsatt and his teammates, there’s unfinished business coming into this season.

“The mindset in the locker room this year is to win state,” he said. “Last year, we came up short and we felt like we could have accomplished it. It didn’t go the way we wanted it to so this year the mindsets to win state.”

To achieve the goal of winning the Red Devils’ first state championship since 1986, Wimsatt said they have to do a few things.

“We’ve got to keep a level head, no matter what happens,” he said. “Stay together, pick each other up, be ready to work every day. That’ll get us there.”

Wimsatt is only halfway through his high school career but he already knows he’s got the ability to accomplish something special, even though he wasn’t sure he’d be where he is just two years ago.

“If you would have told me I would have been 37 in the country going into freshman year, I would have looked at you like you were crazy,” he said. “Now, it’s surreal.”

Wimsatt currently has offers from Kentucky, Louisville, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Virginia Tech, TCU, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Western Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky and Murray State.
