Coaches around the state have made their voices heard the last several weeks, and with the KHSAA Board of Control cementing its decision to begin scheduled practices Monday, local coaches rejoiced.

Games are scheduled to begin Sept. 7 but that could change if the Department of Education, Department of Public Health or the Governor feel the need to intervene.

Several area coaches took time to give their thoughts Thursday, while some programs also took to Twitter.

John Edge, head football coach (Apollo)
“KHSAA got it right. Kids need to play. The players and coaches have done what was asked of us since this pandemic started.”

Jason Morris, head football coach (Owensboro Catholic)
“I am excited for our players. We have done everything that has been asked of us and followed all guidelines. I am glad that the Board of Control understood the importance of high school athletics and are allowing us to play.”

Ryan Poirier, head boys’ soccer coach (Apollo)
“I am encouraged by their decision. I listened in to most of the meeting and I believe they are taking appropriate steps to ensure fall sports happen and are done so in as safe a manner as possible. I hope that Kentucky state government agencies agree and approve their plan. As a coach, we have already rescheduled our entire season once, so being able to keep what we have would be greatly appreciated. Our kids have worked so hard, this summer, and for our upperclassman, the last few years, that it would just be heartbreaking to not see them get a fall sports season in.”

Andy Donohoe, head boys’ soccer coach (Owensboro Catholic)
“Firstly, I have been impressed each time I’ve watched the KHSAA board and commissioner meet to discuss this difficult topic and decision. It is important to note that while there is a great desire to get back to playing, we have to hold the responsibility of the health of our players, coaches, their family, and the greater public in general at the forefront of our policies and actions when partaking in the season. I, like my players and coaches, and suspect other coaches and players in the soccer community, am excited to get back to playing but we can only do so if we are part of the solution through our actions. There is a greater community victory at stake than those seen on the soccer field. We are eager to get the season underway.”

Andy Hines, head girls’ soccer coach (Owensboro Catholic)
“I am in support of the KHSAA and the Board of Control decision today.  Our team and staff have followed the restrictions and worked hard, both on and off the field. We are excited to move forward with the season and some normalcy. We want to play.”

Tyla Bailey, head volleyball coach (Daviess County)
“DCVB is pumped and ready to go. Each day is a gift and we are looking forward to the opportunities that unfold, even during this unique and uncertain time.”
