UPDATE: The DC Lady Panther Invitational has been moved to Wednesday due to potential severe weather.
For the first time in Logan Clark’s young tenure as head coach of the Daviess County girls’ golf team, he and his squad are hosting the DC Lady Panther Invitational on Wednesday at Windridge Country Club.
Clark is in his second year at the helm of the Panthers and said they’re looking forward to the event.
“We’re really excited,” he said. “I know the boys have one just about every year and I wanted to try one for myself and see how I could do it.”
Clark tried to get a tournament going in his first year but given that he never had done it before, he wasn’t sure what to do.
“When I started to do it last year, I was way too late to the game,” he said. “Didn’t realize how much planning actually went into it. This year I knew I really wanted to do one.”
Preparation for the tournament started a few months ago with Clark bringing Windridge into the equation in March.
He said the last month was spent finalizing sponsors, teams and tee times.
The invitational with feature 13 full teams and along with some individuals, 64 total golfers will hit the course Wednesday.
Clark said being on the organizational side of a tournament gives him a better sense of what the other coaches go through when they organize events.
“Every year, we pay our entry fees to go these invitationals out of town and it’s really a great way for the girls to learn tournament play and feel that atmosphere for when they do go to region or if they go to state,” he said. “I never really knew what all went into but having gone to these tournaments for a few years, now hosting my own, I have a much bigger appreciation for what all these coaches have done.”
For Clark and the Panthers, his varsity squad will play in the morning and help finalize things in the afternoon, while the JV will play in the afternoon and helping in the morning.
He said it was important that they be hands-on as well.
“I hope they realize how special it is that we’re hosting our own tournament,” he said. “I actually get to play my full team. … That way they can all really be a part of it.”
Tee times start at 8:30 a.m. with the last grouping heading off the first tee at 11:55 a.m.
