Practices for football, soccer, volleyball and cross country can begin on Monday after the KHSAA Board of Control on Thursday approved the plans already in place. Competition can begin Sept. 7.

Two other options were presented and voted upon but were ultimately voted down, while Option 1 — the plans that had already been laid out — passed 16-2.

However, the Department of Education, Department of Public Health or the governor could intervene and change the decision.

KHSAA Commissioner Julian Tackett said he’s gotten countless emails, calls and other correspondence from coaches, players and fans in past couple of weeks.

He said it has to be about kids and not about politics.

“There is absolutely no doubt that this is going to be the most unusual year we’ve been through,” he said. “We know the value of athletic and we know how it important it is for our kids to participate. We know that that rises above any local debate, but it can’t rise above the need for safety among our students.”

Here’s a complete look at Option 1.
