Former Owensboro Catholic star and current Vanderbilt standout John Augenstein was defeated in the Round of 64 Wednesday at the U.S. Amateur in Bandon, Oregon.

Despite being up two shots at the turn, the No. 7 seed Augenstein fell 1 up to No. 58 seed Matthew Sharpstene.

Augenstein had a good start to the week as he finished stroke play at 5-under, a solid showing after his runner-up finish from a year earlier at the Amateur.

Augenstein had a long putt opportunity to force extra holes on the 18th, but it stopped just on the edge of the final pin.

The Commodore was up two shots after the first nine holes, but back-to-back birdies from Sharpstene made the match all square going into No. 12.

After being down one going into No. 15, Augenstein had a big par on the par-3 to force all square yet again with three holes to play.

Augenstein bogeyed the 16th and couldn’t win either of the final holes to draw back even with Sharpstene.

Augenstein now looks to his final season at Vanderbilt with national championship aspirations.
