Brescia University has been named a one of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) 2019-2020 Champions of Character Five-Star Institutions Gold Level.

This is the second time in the University’s history to reach this Gold Medallion Level. Sixty-eight NAIA institutions earned the Gold Medallion, which is the highest honor, for scoring between 90 and 100 points on their scorecard.

“This award highlights the emphasis we place on character development within our athletic program,” Brescia president Fr. Larry Hostetter said. “We are proud of our students for their hard work on and off the court or field. They put hours of work into training as an athlete but they are also resilient in the classroom and visible in the community. Our coaches and athletic staff should also be commended for setting the bar high and supporting the students to be the best version of themselves.”

According to the NAIA, institutions are measured on character training, conduct in competition, academic focus, character recognition and character promotion. Institutions earn points based on exceptional student-athlete grade point averages and by having minimal to no ejections during competition throughout the course of the academic year.

“Our student-athletes, coaches and athletic department staff are great examples of what it means to represent Brescia University and the NAIA Champions of Character program,” Brescia University Director of Athletics Brian Skortz said.
