Football teams around the state have hopefully shaken off some of the rust by now as week three of the 2020 football season hits the commonwealth tonight, with all four area teams starting their district schedule.

There are only two local home contests tonight as Owensboro welcomes Ohio County and Owensboro Catholic takes on Todd County Central. Apollo is on the road at McCracken County while Daviess County is at Marshall County.

Apollo (1-1) @ McCracken County (2-0)

The Apollo Eagles are coming off of their first win of the John Edge era as they took down Meade County 17-14, but AHS faces a tough task in district foe McCracken County. The Mustangs are 2-0 and have outscored opponents 90-7 this season.

Apollo had several standout performances last week, including Kyler Rutter on defense. Rutter tied for the team lead in tackles and had two interceptions in the victory.

On offense, quarterback Damian Lovinsky was 12-of-18 for 80 yards but ran for 70 yards and a touchdown as Harold Patterson also had a rushing touchdown to go with 120 yards on the ground.

McCracken County cruised by perennial power Mayfield in week one with a 42-7 victory then shutout Marshall County last week with a 57-0 win.

Pryor Lamb has thrown for 249 yards and four touchdowns this season while Hunter Bradley has ran for 209 yards and three scores.

Zander Mayes is the only Mustang over the century mark in receiving as he has six catches for 102 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Ian McCune leads the Mustang in tackles and has an interception. LeAndre Bolen and Jackson Gruber have each returned interceptions for touchdowns this season.

Daviess County (1-1) @ Marshall County (0-2)

After a convincing win week one over Ohio County, the Daviess County Panthers fell 42-34 in a thriller with Owensboro. Tonight, DC heads to Marshall County where the Marshals have yet to score this season.

In his first game back since COVID-19 protocol kept him out of week one, DC quarterback Joe Humphreys threw for 270 yards while finishing with five total touchdowns in the loss. Humphreys dazzled as he went step-for-step with Owensboro’s Gavin Wimsatt.

Bryson Parm has been electric running the football this season as he’s racked up 328 yards and three touchdowns, while Decker Renfrow is leading DC in receiving with nine catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns.

Gunnar Evans has 33 tackles this season but Parker Crews is right behind him with 28 as the duo is leading the Panther defense.

Marshall fell to Calloway County in their opener 33-0 then lost to McCracken 57-0 last week in Paducah.

Marshall County only has 72 passings yards and 109 rushing yards this season as Garrett Parker has 25 carries for 58 yards.

The Marshals have allowed 421 rushing yards and 247 passing yards this season.

Ohio County (1-1) at Owensboro (2-0)

The Owensboro Red Devils head into week three at 2-0 as they’ve taken down crosstown foes Apollo (50-13) and Daviess County (42-34) in the last two weeks.

The Red Devils have used a balanced attack with Gavin Wimsatt throwing for 366 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for 117 yards and three touchdowns. OHS leading rusher Ethan Avery has run for 273 yards and three scores.

To go with two 100+ yard rushers, the Red Devils also have two 100+ yard receivers in Khalil Rogers (9 catches, 110 yards) and Treyvon Tinsley (6 catches, 109 yards, 2 touchdowns).

Austin Gough is leading the Owensboro defense with 29 tackles as he’s one of eight Red Devils with at least 10 tackles.

For 1-1 Ohio County, the name of the game is Q’Daryius Jennings. Jennings has 423 yards and four touchdowns this season while quarterback Devin Gott has three scores on the ground. Gott has also thrown for 250 yards and one touchdown through the air.

The Eagles fell to DC in the opener but cruised by Muhlenberg County 45-7 last week with Jennings running for 305 yards and three touchdowns.

Todd County Central (2-0) at Owensboro Catholic (2-0)

The only local games between undefeated teams kicks off at 7 p.m. tonight at Steele Stadium as Owensboro Catholic welcomes Todd County Central.

The Aces used a big second half to take down Mt. Vernon (Ind.) in the opener, then they cruised by Hopkins County Central 56-6 last week.

The OC offense went wild against the Storm as Lincoln Clancy threw for 263 yards and four touchdowns, Braden Mundy caught three scores for 138 yards and ran another in, and Hunter Monroe hit the century mark in rushing and added a touchdown.

On the season, Mundy has 200 total yards and six touchdowns (3 rushing, 3 receiving) to go with one interception.

Chris Boarman has done his job anchoring the Ace defense as he leads the team in tackles (18), TFL (3) and sacks (2) this season.

The Rebels have a new coach this season in Josh Robins, as their former coach Darell Keith is now coaching in Tennessee.

The Rebels narrowly beat Hopkins County Central week one as they held a 42-39 lead when time expired. In week two, they took down Caverna 45-14.

Preston Moore has thrown for 110 yards and two touchdowns but he’s done more damage with his legs with 226 yards and six touchdowns on the ground. Omarion Riddick is Todd’s leading rusher with 327 yards and two touchdowns.

Gavyn Nolan has both Rebel receiving touchdowns as he’s caught three catches for 63 yards.
