Apollo’s Macey Brown hit the course Friday morning at Bowling Green Country Club and she’ll do the same Saturday but this time she’ll do it as one of the leaders in the field as she sits in second with a round to play.
Brown finished with a 1-under 71 as she trails Madison Central’s Elizabeth Eberle by a shot at the KHSAA State Girls’ Golf Championship.
“I left some out there, it should have been lower but I’m happy with that,” she said.
The Apollo junior wasn’t the only local to make the cut as Daviess County’s Holly Holton (83) and Owensboro’s Alexa Salamah (86) are hitting the course today too. Apollo’s Mary Ann Lyons shot a 92 and missed the cut in her first state tournament.
Brown started on the 10th hole and had two birdies and two bogeys on the back nine. She said coach Jarrod Carter helped her realize she was still good to go.
“I talked to my coach and my coach was like we’re in a good spot, you’re even, just finish it out, finish strong,” she said.
Brown birdied No. 2 and finished her round with seven-straight pars.
“I played good golf and I made some up and downs, made some par putts that I needed to make,” she said. “It was just all around just a good day.”
Golfers hit the course earlier today as Salamah is the first to play as she tees off at 7:12 a.m. Holton heads to the 10th tee at 7:48 a.m. while Brown is off at 8:24 a.m. with the leader Eberle.
Brown said she’s going to keep things simple Friday night and just get ready for hopefully a solid round today.
“It’s just getting good sleep, getting something to eat in your body, eating healthy foods,” she said. “Water, lots of water. It’s a new day. You have to look at it like that. Yesterday doesn’t count anymore, it’s a whole new day. You have to go out there and shoot your best.”
