There are only six soccer teams left on the boy’s and girls’ side in the 3rd Region as this week will decide who will move on to the state tournament.
For the boys’ tournament at Muhlenberg County, Apollo takes on Meade County at 5:30 p.m. tonight while Daviess County takes on the host Mustangs in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
In the girls’ tournament at Shifley Park, Owensboro Catholic advances to the semifinals because of COVID protocol so the Lady Aces advance to Tuesday’s semifinal. Daviess County and Grayson County hit the pitch at 6 p.m. tonight.
BSOC (at Muhlenberg County)
5:30 p.m.: Apollo v Meade County
The Apollo Eagles are back in the region tournament for the first time since 2008 after taking down Owensboro Catholic in the first round of the 9th District Tournament last week.
The Eagles are 8-5-1 this season and fourth in the RPI in the region while Meade County is near the bottom at 1-11-1.
Apollo won the only meeting this season between the teams as it grabbed at 3-1 victory on Sept. 19.
Harrison Bowman leads Apollo in goals (12) and assists (10) this season while Teranse Twihenya is second in each category with 7 goals and 8 assists but Twihenya is out Monday after getting two yellow cards in the first round of the district tournament.
Steven Teran has played in 12 games at keeper for the Eagles as he has 72 saves and two shutouts this season.
Meade County has struggled to score this season as they have just 17 goals on the year. Grayson Pollock (8) and Brycen Schmidt (7) lead the team while Pollock has 5 assists.
Apollo will try to keep its magically season going to set up a matchup with Ohio County on Tuesday.
7:30 p.m.: Daviess County v Muhlenberg County
In Monday’s nightcap, the Daviess County Panthers are making another appearance in the 3rd Region Tournament as they take on host Muhlenberg County at 7:30 p.m.
Daviess County is 10-2-4 this season and is second in the region in wins but the Panthers have the top RPI while the Mustangs finished the regular season in the middle of the pack at 4-7-2.
Hunter Clark leads a trio of Panthers with double-digit goals this season as the senior has 13 goals and 11 assists on the year. Declan Armistead (11 goals) and Tanner Anderson (10 goals) have also helped the DC offense.
The Mustangs are led by Dylan Neimi and his 10 goals as Muhlenberg County has scored 24 goals this season, just under half of the Panthers’ total of 49 goals.
Monday’s winner will take on Grayson County at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
6 p.m.: Daviess County v Grayson County
The Daviess County Panthers’ streak of four-straight 9th District titles was snapped last week in their 2-0 loss to the Aces but coach David Sandifer and his team are all too familiar with the layout of the 3rd Region.
DC is 6-5-2 this season while Grayson comes into the match at 4-8.
Steeley Walker and Avery McNeiley lead the team with 9 goals each this season as McNeiley also leads the team in assists with 6. Fellow senior Mackenzie Sweatt is right behind her with 5 assists.
Gillian Johnston (13 goals, 6 assists) and Ellie Evans (10 goals, 7 assits) lead the Lady Cougars this season as they’re coming off of a 10-0 loss to Meade County in the 11th District title.
Daviess County and Grayson County will battle for a spot in the semifinals at 8 p.m. at Shifley Park with the winning getting Ohio County on Tuesday.
