The Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces not only snapped their four-match losing streak Monday in a victory over Owensboro but they also locked up the No. 2 seed in next week’s 9th District Tournament.
Catholic cruised to the 10-1 win over the Lady Devils at OCHS as it’s the third time the Aces have scored 10 goals in a game this season.
The last loss of their losing streak came Saturday in 1-0 defeat to Daviess County.
Catholic coach Andy Hines said his team is getting better and he’s glad at how they bounced back.
“Sometimes we don’t play very well because we’re young, a little inconsistent,” he said. “We’re a very young team. For the majority of it, there’s a lot of freshmen and sophomores out there getting a lot of time. Sometimes those scoring opportunities or those decision in the final third, make a mistake or make an extra pass or you don’t shoot when you need to shoot. I think that’s part of what you saw the other night against Daviess County. We’re growing.”
With only two goals in their previous four games, the Lady Ace offense exploded with five goals in each half.
“We’ve been talking about switching the point of attack,” Hines said.
The plan worked for the Aces as they led wire-to-wire.
Ashton Logsdon and Emmy Moore, along with a first-half hat trick from Maddie Hayden, set the tone in the opening 40:00 for Catholic.
Rylee Cox scored the lone goal for Owensboro in the loss as she found the back of the net for the second-straight game.
Annie Helwig, Gracie Johnson, Ella Claira Goetz and Rachel Traylor, along with Hayden’s fourth goal, all came in the final half of play.
The Lady Ace defense has allowed two goals in its last two games and Hines said that was a point of emphasis as of late.
“We struggled in the first 6-7 games with the back line, we fixed the back line a lot,” he said. “Our back line was deep and giving up lots of space. Now our back line is cleaned up and now it’s just trying to keep some practices in to work on the attacking third.”
For the Lady Devils, it’s just their fifth game of the season as they now sit at 3-2 with one game left on their schedule. OHS plays at Daviess County Wednesday.
Catholic plays tonight at home against McCracken County then finishes its regular-season Friday afternoon against Meade County.
