The Owensboro Red Devils will head into next week’s Class 5A State Playoffs with not only the top RPI in the class, but the No. 3 spot in the AP poll as well.
OHS finished 8-0 on the regular season, it’s first perfect regular season since 1993 as the Red Devils outscored opponents 384-95 this season. Owensboro scored at least 41 points in every game but one this season as the closest margin of victory was eight in a 42-34 victory over rival Daviess County in Week 2.
Red Devil coach Jay Fallin said he’s excited about what his team has done this season but knows there’s plenty of work left to be done.
“It’s always good to see the efforts of the players and coaches recognized, particularly on a state-wide level,” he said. “That said, we’re still focused on getting better every day. I think the ranking as we enter the playoffs is a reflection of how our program fosters constant improvement across the duration of the season.
“It’s easy to be excited about practice and improvement through the summer and in September, but we like to focus on being the best team we can possibly be in November and December.”
Owensboro starts the KHSAA Class 5A State Playoffs next week at home against Breckinridge County, a team they beat 69-6 in the regular-season finale at Rash Stadium.
