Four teams remain in the KHSAA Class 5A State Football Playoffs as six teams took the field Friday night with Owensboro already moving on to this week’s semifinal due to a positive Covid-19 test with Fairdale.

The 2020 Class 5A Semifinals will feature the same matchups from the 2019 semifinals.

The Red Devils will host Frederick Douglass while defending champ Covington Catholic will take on Bowling Green in the other semifinal.

Here’s a look at Friday’s results from Class 5A.

Frederick Douglass 21, Southwestern 20

Frederick Douglass narrowly edged Southwestern Friday night in Somerset Friday night with the Broncos grabbing a 21-20 victory to advance to their second-straight semifinal.

The Broncos had a 21-6 lead with quarterback Samual Cornett tossing touchdown passes to Kentucky commit Dekel Crowdus (20-yard) and Isaiah Allen (52-yard).

Southwestern made a run to make it 21-20 with 51.0 left as Connor Crisp scored to make it a one-point game.

The Warriors then went for the two-point conversion but Crisp was stopped by the Bronco defense to give Frederick Douglass the victory.

Bowling Green 55, North Bullitt 7

It was all Purples Friday night in Bowling Green as they cruised by North Bullitt 55-7 to set up a matchup with Covington Catholic in next week’s 5A semifinal round.

North Bullitt scored the first touchdown of the game on its first drive when Cole Durbin punched it on from two yards out but that would be the only time the Eagles would find the endzone Friday night.

Bowling Green then scored 55 unanswered points as they led 32-0 at the half before putting the cherry on top in the second half.

Bowling Green will advance to play the defending champion Colonels Friday night in Park Hills.
