Owensboro 84, Butler County 55

Despite a slow first half, the Owensboro Red Devils found their form in the final two quarters are they took down Butler County Monday at OHS.

The Red Devils start the season with a victory as they cruised by the Bears 84-55 after only leading 37-34 at the break.

Amari Robinson-Wales led Owensboro with 17 points.

The Red Devils are off until Saturday when they head south to take on Hopkinsville at Christian County in the Toyota of Hopkinsville Classic.

Owensboro Catholic 82, Evangel Christian 41

Owensboro Catholic’s lone senior led the Aces Monday night at the Owensboro Sportscenter as they doubled up Evangel Christian to star the season on a high note.

Gray Weaver led all scorers with 25 points while Brian Griffith added 23 in the 82-41 win over the Eagles.

The Aces held a 14-10 lead after the first frame but built on their lead and were in complete control as they led 41-25 at halftime. Catholic poured it on in the second half as they outscored Evangel Christian 39-18.

Ji Webb also finished in double digits for the Aces with 13 points. Sam McFarland and Parker Gray each added 8 points.

Evangel Christian was led by Dawson Black’s 13 points with Rayvon Marzette also finishing in double figures with 12 points.

The Aces play at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Whitesville Trinity in the 3rd Region All “A” Classic Tournament at the Owensboro Sportscenter.

Union County 74, Apollo 69 (OT)

The Apollo Eagles held a late lead in regulation and hit a shot at the buzzer to force overtime but it was Union County that took the victory Monday in Morganfield.

UC beat Apollo 74-69 despite four Apollo starters finishing in double figures.

The Eagles came out of the gate strong as they led 16-9 after the first frame with Cameron Frantz scoring 9 of his 14 points in the quarter.

The Braves led 32-28 at the break then held a 47-45 lead going into the final quarter.

Apollo led 56-52 with 3:41 left before Union went on a run. The Braves led 65-62 in the closing seconds as Jaden Kelly buried a 3-pointer at the buzzer to push it to over for the Eagles.

The Braves outscored Apollo 9-4 in OT to grab the victory.

Landon Hamilton led all Eagles with 18 points while Harrison Bowman (13 points) and Dan St Clair (10 points) also finished in double figures. Jaden Kelly added 9.

Kris Hughes and Isaiah Manuel led Union County with 17 points a piece.

Apollo plays at home Thursday as it takes on the Murray Tigers.

Owensboro Catholic 71, Edmonson County 41

The Owensboro Catholic Lady Aces had two players in double figures during Monday’s season opener against Edmonson County with every playing scoring for Catholic in the dominant victory in the 3rd Region All “A” Classic Tournament.

The Lady Aces held their lead throughout the game as they took down the Wildcats 71-41.

Catholic led 37-23 at the break and dominated the second half, outscoring Edmonson 35-18.

Kinsley Goetz led Catholic with 13 points while Rachel Traylor added 11.

Edmonson’s Kadie Lindsey led the Wildcats with 14 points with Macie McCombs chipping in 12.

Katie Riney (4), Hailee Johnson (4), Brooke Hamilton (6), Lexie Keelin (6), Maddie Hayden (4), Catherine Head (6), Camille Conkright 6, Kashlynn Rice (2), Lauren Keelin (7) and Ally Maggard (2) all ended up in the scoring column for the Lady Aces.

Catholic advances in the All “A” and will take on Whitesville Trinity at 7:30 p.m. at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
