Not many had thought we’d get to this point. The time of the year where shoes squeak on a nightly basis, athletes risk life and limb to take down another on the mat, in the pool when it’s near freezing or any other of the winter sports/activities that occur this time of the year.
Fall sports went on and were completed, albeit several canceled/rescheduled games but it happened and we got to crown state champions, including Apollo’s Macey Brown in the KHSAA Girls’ Golf State Championship.
Now hoops are here. For me, it’s my favorite time of the year. Two of my grandfathers were basketball coaches and I’ve been going to games with my dad for as long as I remember. One of my earliest hoops memories is watching a junior high state championship in southern Illinois where one of the teams dyed their hair blonde for the game … They lost.
Most of my connections in sports have come from basketball and it will also hold a special place for me.
During my time in Hopkinsville, I got to see some great hoops from many really good players.
In the last week, I’ve seen every team in Daviess County practice and I couldn’t be more excited about what the area has to offer.
Each team has something special or different going for them this season.
On the boys’ side, Apollo has a new coach, Daviess County has one of the longest teams it has had in years, Owensboro is trying to regain its place atop the 3rd Region, Owensboro Catholic is trying to continue its reign and actually get to play in a KHSAA State Sixteen while Trinity is hitting the court without a senior on its roster.
For the girls, Apollo is looking to take the 3rd Region, Daviess County is ready to make their move in the county, Owensboro has one of the top freshman in the area, Owensboro Catholic is Owensboro Catholic and Trinity, like the boys’ team is relying on youth this season.
Whoever you root for, wear your mask, wash your heads and buckle up. It’s going to be a fun season.
