Owensboro Catholic entered its contest Tuesday against Ohio County on the heels of back-to-back losses to Breckinridge County and Christian Academy-Louisville but the Lady Aces weren’t ready to have their first three-game losing streak since early last season.
Despite some hot shooting from Ohio County early, the Lady Aces settled down and ended the game on an 11-2 run to take down Ohio County 61-47.
Catholic coach Michael Robertson said the last couple of games were tough and they had to focus on themselves before they could worry about an opponent.
“It was a little soul searching,” he said after the back-to-back losses. “The big thing is we were turning the ball over too much. We were turning the ball over and not getting shots. What we talked about, we’ve only had nine in practice so it’s hard to simulate much, was to take care of the ball and not turn the ball over so much.”
Both teams came out slow in the first frame as it was 9-9 after one but both teams were about to heat up.
Ohio County’s Addie Bullock hit four 3-pointers inside of three minutes to start the second to give her team a lead but midway through the frame, the momentum shifted toward the Aces.
“My (assistant) coach was over here yelling at me to take a timeout,” Robertson said. “I said I’m not taking a timeout. Sometimes you’ve got to do that but she hit three, I didn’t think they were going to keep that and all I was going to do was give them more momentum to go over there and cheer. I was just going to go over there and weather that storm. We hit some shots and we were right back in it. They hit all those shots and they were only up by eight. I wasn’t too worried, I knew we had to weather the storm. I’m just glad we’re out of the 30s.”
Even with the run from Eagles, the Aces went into the half with a 35-26 lead.
Catholic extended its lead in the second half but Ohio County wouldn’t go away just yet. With a few minutes left, the Lady Eagles cut the Ace lead to 50-45 but Catholic ended the game on an 11-2 run to grab its sixth win of the year.
Hailee Johnson led the Lady Aces with 16 points as Maddie Hayden (12 points) and Catherine Head (10 points) also finished in double digits.
“Hailee Johnson finally hit a jumper from the outside and that made the biggest difference in her game tonight,” he said. “Camille Conkright, another solid game. Ally Maggard played solid. I could go on and on. Maddie Hayden did a lot, she got a lot of steals. Catherine Head, consistent. Rachel Traylor, Brooke Hamilton came in and gave me some good minutes tonight. Kinsley Goetz came in the second half and played a lot better.
“An overall good team performance.”
Catholic is off until Friday when it hosts Owensboro in a 9th District tilt at the Sportscenter.
